Reading Shakespeare: Histories

Annotation

Objective:

To read and interpret Shakespeare´s English history plays in relevant Shakespearean and cultural contexts.

Members of the seminar will read and interpret Shakespeare´s histories (Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI,

Richard III and Henry VIII) and select relevant passages for closer reading. Each play will be read an interpreted within the wider contexts of the English and European renaissance. Special attention will be paid to Shakespeare´s understanding of history, to the problem of fact and fiction in Shakespeare´s histories and other relevant issues.

Further details will be specified at the first session of the seminar.

Assessment:

Active participation in the seminar discussions, one oral presentation, one essay.
