Irish is the oldest literary language in Europe north of the Alps. It can boast of a continuous written record from at least the eighth century, including glosses to Latin manuscripts, a sophisticated poetic tradition and, preserved in manuscripts since the twelfth century, also a large corpus of narrative literature of native provenance.
The course will provide basics of Old Irish grammar with some reference to later developments. Samples of original texts will be translated and analyzed.
Course materials will be provided and no previous knowledge of Irish (of any period) will be required.
