Annotation

The aim of the course is to present the most important contributions of philosophy and psychology to our understanding of consciousness so that the students can critically discuss intricate questions concerning consciousness, such as: what are the limits of our self-knowledge, how much does the unconscious influence our conscious mental life, whether animals and babies are conscious, whether computers can be conscious, what is self-awareness, whether we have free will, whether and how we can measure and study consciousness or what can the altered states of consciousness tell us about the normal state. Most of the class will be devoted to discussion of the questions (so active participation and following the course readings will be crucial).

Every topic will be introduced by a short lecture in order to provide solid ground for the discussion. Readings will be assigned for every week.

Prior knowledge of philosophy or psychology is welcomed but not required. More info here: https://sites.google.com/site/consciousnessffuk/
