Annotation

Czech glassmaking is a world-famous concept. The tradition of its production in the Czech lands begins in the 3rd century BC. It became an export item after the discovery of Czech crystal at the end of the 17th century, when Czech glass also became an object of non-European long-distance trade. In addition to utility glass, it was also used for lighting, mirrors and jewellery. The Czech glass industry still holds an important position on the world market today, although its once prime position is a thing of the past in the face of steeply rising competition.

The lecture series will present the field in an international context and from the perspective of economic, social and cultural history, including the history of applied art. Attention will also be paid to selected representative historical and contemporary industry figures and firms.
