* Syllabus of the subject:

1. Recurrence: Auxiliary Historical Sciences, Subject and Methods of Paleography, Basic Literature.

2. Repetition: Medieval (Latin) paleography.

3. History of the modern (Latin) paleography.

4. Writing material.

5. Manuscript writing in modern times and teaching writing.

6. Categorization of manuscript writing in modern times.

7. Development of modern manuscript writing in Italy, France, England and Germany.

8. Development of modern manuscript writing in Bohemia.

9. Abbreviations, digits, transcription rules.

10. Print Fonts I.

11. Print Fonts II.

12. Special script.

Annotation

The seminar focuses on the basic knowledge and skills in the field of modern palaeography in the context of book history. In the individual lessons, the students will be acquainted with the subject and methods of paleography, history of the field, manuscript script in modern times and teaching of script, categorization of manuscript script in modern times, development of modern manuscript script in Italy, France, England, Germany and Bohemia as well as abbreviations used, transcription rules, the script used in prints and inscriptions and special scripts.

Students should also be able to understand some of the provenance features of old books, in particular the various provenance marks, based on reading examples of old manuscript scripts.
