In this lecture, we will discuss the interaction of languages in Southeastern Europe. In area linguistics, in particular the orientation towards a geographical aspect is decisive. Therefore, we will focus on the interplay between languages and their geography, which, in Southeastern Europe as elsewhere, goes along with language contact. In addition to linguistic questions of language contact, we shed light on topics such as social aspects and methodological approaches in the study of language contact. We will analyse how language contact is structured regionally and what effects it has on the languages in Southeastern Europe.
