The course deepens knowledge of theoretical concepts of new media and focuses on the relationship between technology and society. At the core is a critical reflection on selected texts in media theory. Over the course of the semester, students should develop a variety of perspectives that seek to interpret the impact of technological change in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries on society. Reflections on technology and science take a variety of forms, from technological determinism and ecological critique to autopoietic conceptions of technology. The aim of the course is to confront old and new conceptions of media technology, to analyse different discourses and philosophical reflections, and to trace changes not only in how we understand technology and science, but also how technology and science themselves change our understanding of culture, nature and philosophy.
Attestation will be tied to work during the semester and the presentation of a final project.
