Program of the lecture

1. Invention of photography entering into the post-romantic atmosphere of Europe

2. Czech cultural situation of the 30s & 50s of the 19th century and the first daguerrotypists in Czech Lands

3. Professional existence of photography in Europe in the 2nd half of the 19th century and the effects of its technical development

4. Czech studios in the 2nd half of the 19th century and the image of the then establishing itself Czech society in their photographs

5. Situation of American and European photography and their reciprocal contacts in the period round 1900

6. The start of Czech modern thinking and culture about after1895. Czech photography in those years, incl. pictorialism etc.

7. In the 1920s: linking up to pre-WW1 ideas and the development of modern Czech photography

Annotation

HISTORY OF CZECH PHOTOGRAPHY

A one-semester lecture cannot and does not aim to substitute individual studies of relevant literature, while, however, being a basis for them. It is drafted on the historical development of photography in this country. It will also, in a comparative way, allude to different cultural areas and characteristic civilization moments which may have been important for photography at certain periods of history. Important data and events in the European and in the American photography will be commented in connection with the development of local photography. Discovery of the specific creativity of photography will be accented, and that from its invention period already, and also in its specificity to human communication.

Individual studies of those areas of culture mentioned at the lecture will be regarded as compulsory for fulfilling the requirements of studies program just as much as mastering the history of photography in the extent of the lecture.
