Principles to be covered:
Historical Background: Strategy as a continuation of foreign policy, (Clausewitz); (Maritime Mahan) v. Heartland (Mackinder) theories of strategy determination.
Power and Threat Analysis: The limits of power. Hard and Soft Power. Threats before and after 1990. Current risk portfolios. Imperial overstretch.
Typology of War: Total and Limited war. Preventive war and pre-emptive action. Just and Unjust wars. Low intensity warfare.
Terrorism
Nuclear Issues: Rise and fallof deterrence. Proliferation. Missile defence.
Intervention: Changing concepts of sovereignty. Peace-making and peace-keeping.
Fragile states. Human rights.
Conflict Resolutions and Crisis Management: Possible case studies - Kosovo, Iraq, Congo, Ruanda, etc.
This seminar is for Masters degree students. The working language will be English. Students will be required to write a seminar paper on a topic of their own choosing, and to make a brief oral presentation.
The cource carries 4 credits.
