Syllabus of Summer Course on “Environmental Politics”

Lecture 1: Course Orientation. a) Overview of all the topics covered in the course (with a ppt. presentation), along with a brief overview and discussion of the reading list. b) Orientation with regard to the method of evaluation (10% classroom participation + 75% individual paper + 15% student presentation) – also with a brief overview of how the individual papers and student presentations will be graded (brief overview of how progressive levels of mastery of the subject will be assigned different grades). c) Classroom discussion focused on students’ awareness of environmental politics in the Czech Republic and globally.
Lecture 2: Environmental Politics and Theory - 1 a) Ppt. presentation on Political Ecology b) Classroom discussion on this environmental theory – focus on encouraging students to relate these theories to environmental problems, politics and issues that they are aware of. Students will also have to present their opinions on the readings.
Lecture 3: Environmental Politics and Theory - 2 a) Ppt. presentation on Ecological Modernization b) Classroom discussion on this environmental theory – focus on encouraging students to relate these theories to environmental problems, politics and issues that they are aware of. Lecture 5: Environmental Politics and Theory – 4 a) Ppt. presentation on Deep Ecology b) Classroom discussion on this environmental theory – focus on encouraging students to relate these theories to environmental problems, politics and issues that they are aware of. Students will also have to present their opinions on the readings.
Lecture 6: Environmental Politics and Theory – 5 a) Ppt. presentation on Eco-socialism b) Classroom discussion on this environmental theory – focus on encouraging students to relate these theories to environmental problems, politics and issues that they are aware of. Students will also have to present their opinions on the readings.
Lecture 7: Environmental Politics, Communism and Transition. a) Ppt. presentation on Environmental Politics, Communism and Transition with a focus on the context of the Czech Republic. b) Classroom discussion on the awareness or personal experiences students may have of this issue. In the previous class, students will be encouraged to speak to family members who experienced Communism as adults, with the aim to ask them what their experiences of environmental problems were, during Communism. Students will then be encouraged to discuss any insights they may have gained from these discussions, in the class dealing with this topic. Students will also have to present their opinions on the readings. In this class, those students who have selected this topic to present on shall also make short presentations. Those who want to write and present on the environmental theories that were discussed in previous classes, can also present.

Environmental politics and issues related to contemporary India will also be discussed. Students will also have to present their opinions on the readings. In this class, those students who have selected this topic to present on shall also make short presentations. Those who want to write and present on the environmental theories that were discussed in previous classes, can also present.

Students will also have to present their opinions on the readings. In this class, those students who have selected this topic to present on shall also make short presentations.
