Syllabus

1. Historical introduction (first gravity surveys; historical instruments, references)2.

Fundamental principles (Newton low of gravity; gravity acceleration and centrifugal acceleration; contributions of the Earth's layers to gravity; physical units used in gravity surveys)3. Measurement of gravity (absolute measurements; relative measurements; precision of field measurements)4.

Theory of gravity field (intensity; potential; principle of superposition; gravity attraction and gradients 3D- mass distributions; gravity attraction and gradients 2D- mass distributions)5.1 Gravity attraction of simple geometrical shapes (mass point and sphere; horizontal line and cylinder; horizontal rod; vertical rod; vertical cylinder, ring, infinite horizontal slab; rectangular prism; vertical sheet; horizontal sheet; vertical semiinfinite slab)5.2 Gravity attraction of complex shapes (2D mass distributions homogeneous; 2D mass distributions inhomogeneous; 2.5D a 2.75D mass distributions)6. Gravity field of the Earth (gravity and spherical Earth; geoid and reference elipsoid; formulas for calculating of theoretical gravity field)7.

Gravity corrections and gravity anomalies (tides; drift; latitude correction, gravity anomaly; free air correction, free air anomaly; Bouguer slab correction, Bouguer anomaly; terrain correction and complete Bouguer anomaly; isostasy, isostatic correction, isostatic anomaly) 8. Densities of rocks (definition of different types of rock densities; laboratory measurements; determination of densities from gravity measurements; densities of rocks and Earth’s layers)   9.

Acquisition and processing of gravity data (preliminary modeling, check and ajusting of gravity meter constants, measurements of altitudes of gravity stations, error of measurements)   10. Interpretation of measurements (ambiguity of interpretation; qualitative interpretation; regional - residual separation; transformations; guantitative interpretation; modeling) 11.
