This lecture covers the elementary description of the geological and geomorphological setting and development of the area of the Czech Republic. The geological development is described both regionally and in the context of the formation of the European continent. The lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of forest ecosystems in the Czech Republic, their distribution, composition, dynamics, and threads. A specific focus will be on the current forest performance under climate change manifested in growth trends, changes in growth phenology, occurrence of disturbances, and redistribution of growth-limiting climatic factors. Important long-term forest monitoring networks and available datasets on forest conditions in the Czech Republic will be introduced. 26.4.2024 Selected Problems of the Czech Environment (Assoc. prof. Lecture will give an overview about recent state of the environment in the Czech Republic. Main environmental weaknesses and threats will be stressed. Special emphasis will be put on acidification, changes in nutrient regime and its consequences.
