Syllabus

Writing English academic texts in computer science and mathematics (thesis introductions, conference and talk abstracts, reviews, and other genres).

English language development exercises (grammar, vocabulary, collocations).

The above is indicative: the exact nature of the syllabus will develop according to the needs of participating students.

The primary focus of the course is acquiring proficiency in academic English vocabulary, grammar and style by means of regular writing exercises and verbal discussion in English. Extracts from a range of English mathematics and computer science texts (some chosen by participating students themselves) will be used as a basis for learning techniques of language and composition at a micro and macro level (for example, formal and technical English vocabulary, sentence structures and cohesion, and typical journal article structures).

Annotation

English for writing computer science and mathematics texts of various genres (talk abstracts, journal articles etc.) and extending knowledge of the English language through discussion and writing.

Limited enrolment; recommended primarily for Masters and PhD students.
