Topics:

English phonetics and phonology, subdivision and some basic terminology (phoneme, allophone, sound, minimal pair, accent x dialect; GB, ELF, IPA)

Relationship between speech and writing; classification of speech organs; phonation

English vocalic system - vowel quality

English vocalic system - vowel quantity; diphthongs and triphthongs

General classification of English consonants

English plosives (aspiration, stop releases)

English fricatives and affricates

English nasals

English approximants

Allophonic variation

Connected speech - assimilation

Connected speech - linking and elision

Annotation

The course aims at introducing some basic concepts of English phonetics and phonology on the segmental level including the changes individual sounds undergo in connected speech (assimilation, elision and liaison). The main emphasis is put on training the pronunciation of selected English sounds and on the development of transcription skills.
