Annotation

The course acquaints students with the development of pedagogical thinking, school policy and educational institutions at Czech Republic and in the world in various cultural epochs from historical beginnings to the present. Special attention is paid to the issue of development in the Czech lands with regard to the world context. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the development of pedagogical thinking, school policy and educational institutions in various cultural epochs.

1. Education in ancient Greece and Rome. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Quintilian.

2. Education in the Middle Ages. Christianity and its influence on education. Scholastic. Church, city, university schools.

3. Education in the period of humanism and renaissance. Erasmus, Rabelais. Reformation and counter-reformation education (Unity of Brethren, education of the Jesuit order).

4. Pedagogy of J. A. Komenský.

5. Pedagogy of the Enlightenment. Locke, Rousseau, Pestalozzi. Education in the Czech lands (Theresian reform, so-called patriotic teachers, K. S. Amerling).

6. Pedagogy and education in the 19th century. J. F. Herbart. Herbarism. Fröbel, Lindner. Education in the Czech lands in the 19th century.

7. Development of the school as an educational institution. Teacher education.

8. Reform pedagogy in the world. Pedagogical directions of the 20th century.

9. Education and pedagogy in Czechoslovakia in the 20th century.
