Annotation Older Czech and European literature - lectures Winter term Main objective: On the basis of new knowledge to acquaint students with Czech and European early modern literature, its specifics, to draw attention to problematic and outdated theses, which are the basis of most older studies and reviews of the history of Czech literature Breakdown of lectures (once a week):
1. Introduction to the world of older literature. Revision of basic concepts. Specifics. Limited today's rating options. The links and divisions between humanistic and baroque literature on the one hand and enlightened and early revival on the other.

3. Folklore and literature. Lamentations in relation to apocrypha and prayers, fairy tale in relation to exemplums, legends and books of folk reading. Folk theater. Interest in folk literature and culture.

5. Literature for folk readers in the 16th - 18th centuries. Prayer books. Folk reading books. Books on pilgrimage sites. Postily. Kramářské písně.
6. -7. Specialized literature, literature for educated readers. Pre-White and White-earth historiography. Early modern treatise. Translations of Scripture. Poetry.
8. Exile and domestic literature, differences between individual confessional groups in exile.
9. Incorporation of Czech issues into the wider European context, exchange contacts with the South German environment. Court literature and genres missing in Bohemia. Nomadic theater companies, the influence of the Romanesque world on Germany and Central Europe.
10. Spanish and Italian literature of the early modern period, rhetorical textbooks, the beginnings of the novel, baroque epic and baroque lyric, marinism, gorgorism.
11. French and English early modern literature, préciosité, euphuism, English novel, drama, classicizing baroque and classicism in France.
12. Early modern literature in Poland, Russia, the Balkans.
13. Difference between Bavarian and North German literary environment in early modern period, influence of Netherlands, Silesian poets, influence of Romance world on Germany and Central Europe. Each lecture starts with a short presentation of about 5-10 editions and studies on older Czech and European literature, books are circulating among students during the lecture. After completion of the individual blocks, there is space for discussion and partial questions. Older Czech Literature - Seminars by Miloš Sládek Winter term Main goal: To acquaint students with basic manuals and tools for studying older Czech literature, to prepare them for the main seminar work of the subject (preparation of a reading edition of a text from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries). Structure of seminars (once every 14 days):
1. Reading examples from prints and manuscripts from the 17th and 18th centuries.
2. Listening and understanding of the 17th century folk song (work with Jungmann's Czech-German dictionary); educational dictionaries and the level of their data devoted to older literature
3. Determination of prints according to the data on the title sheets, work with the Book of Czech and Slovak Prints until 1800 and with the Error Dictionary of Letterpresses
4. Analysis of Vavák's congratulatory text, accents, literary Kabbalah

Editorial principles in the publication of early modern Czech literary monuments (main principles, comparison of the failed modern edition with the original) Older Czech and European literature Annotation since 2012 Tomáš Havelka The aim of this course is to get acquainted with problems of interpretation of pre-enlightenment texts and to acquire basic methodological equipment for work with old prints and manuscripts. Seminars follow lectures from older Czech and European literature. The winter semester is devoted to selected problems of methodology, such as reading old prints and manuscripts, mastering basic work with linguistic and bibliographic aids (Book, Handbook of Humanistic Poetry, inventories of manuscripts of Czech libraries, internet databases). The summer semester is devoted to editorial work, methods of preparing an older text for publication. Seminars take place as a discussion of problems or texts. Active participation is expected. Requirements for credit: editorial preparation of a given early modern text in the extent of approximately 4 standard pages (homiletics, hagiography), ie editorial preparation of the text, processing of comments and critical notes.
