Annotation

The student gets acquainted with the conception of French syntax. He or she pays attention to congruent and different sentence patterns and specific phenomena related to them.

The student is informed about the semantic character of French syntax. He or she notices the high frequency of semi-predicative constructions (particularly with the infinitive, le gérondif, and le participe présent) and understands their formation and employment conditioned for instance by the occurrence of the same subject in two juxtaposed clauses, or by the potential functional shift, whereby a subject of the main clause becomes an object of the subordinate clause.

The student focuses particularly on subordinate clauses and their form. He or she also realises the existence of the subordinate result clause and the missing types compared to Czech, for example the locative and modal types of subordinate clauses.

When analysing French texts, the student puts into effect the knowledge of sequence of tenses, especially the issue of content clauses, and would simultaneously observe the occurrence of l’indicatif, le subjonctif, or le conditionnel (au cas où) after some expressions. The student attempts to make use of the range of potential conjunctions (less frequent ones as well) in connection with the given type of subordinate clause.

He or she distinguishes stylistic nuances of the individual conjunctions, and masters the conversion of simple sentences to complex sentences while maintaining the default type, and vice versa. With respect to a tendency towards interweaving of the miscellany of syntactic classes, the student’s attention is drawn to the potential projection of some meanings of subordinate clauses to paratactic dimensions, e.g. in the context of an adverbial clause de l’opposition converted into a compound sentence using adversative conjunctions such as mais, etc.
