The aim of the course is to introduce students to some major works of English literature from its earliest beginnings to the end of the eighteenth century. Poetry and drama dominate with prose beginning to make its presence felt towards the end of the course.
The course is taught through lectures and seminars; the lectures are prepared in order to offer a general social and cultural context for the course texts. The seminars should involve students in close reading and literary analysis of individual works.
