Description of the Study Unit

The aims of the study unit are that the student:

- knows how to apply participatory social work theories and perspectives to work with marginalised and excluded people

- knows how to apply the theory and practice of community development work in relation to marginalisation and social exclusion

- understands the different approaches needed for working with different groups of excluded or marginalised people (elderly, unemployed, low paid, families in poverty etc.)

- is able to use social work and community work methods to address social problems such as substance abuse or anti-social behaviour of young people

- is able to use quantitative research methods and relate them to other research methods, especially in understanding social exclusion

The contents of the study module include:

- Deeper knowledge of the theories and perspectives of participatory social work and community development work

- Comparing different approaches to tackling social exclusion based on participation

- Theoretical and methodological approaches to social problems such as substance abuse and anti- social behaviour

- Deepening the overview of research methods and application of quantitative research especially in relation to marginalisation and social exclusion

Placement orientation and preparation

Weeks 2 – 6 1.66cr

Written assignment on social or community work methods

Describe and analyse one chosen professional perspective (community development work / social work/youth work) and its application in the student’s placement context. Show how the perspective relates to the systemic aspects of the issues faced (ecological approach) and participation. Assignment to be uploaded by the end of week 6

Thesis Seminar 1

Each student presents a thesis proposal and defends it; One other student acts as the opponent
