Description of the Study Unit:

The aims of the study unit are that the student:

- Is able to understand the impact of cultural identity on attitudes and values

- Is familiar with the central concepts and theoretical approaches to integration, pluralism, multiculturalism and transculturalism

- Is familiar with the impact of minority status on health and wellbeing

- Can evaluate the position of the worker in relation to the diverse ‘other’, personally and professionally (link with exposure process)

- Is able to reflect on the impact of diversity issues on their practice in youth and community development work and participatory social work

- Is able to practice group work in relation to diversity issues

The contents of the study unit include:

- Sociological and economic understanding of racism and discrimination

- Critical approach to multiculturalism and other concepts related to diversity issues

- Impact of minority status on health and wellbeing

- Practice issues in relation to diversity and difference

- Group work skills and practice

Week 7

Video lecture about dialog between religions

Reading for group exam: Parekh, B. (2005) Rethinking Multiculturalism: Cultural Diversity and Political theory, 2nd ed (200 pages, which pages?). London, Palgrave Macmillan 2,5 cr. (including exam)

MOD Training (Diversity and dialogue): The purpose of Diversity and Dialogue training is to prevent society developing in the direction of more discrimination. The issues dealt with in the training always fundamentally arise out of the issue of power in society. The training aims to promote ethically sustainable social action which respects human rights. Ethical action presupposes a sense of situation, tolerance of uncertainty and questioning what we take for granted. 1,5 cr
