In his Summa contra Gentiles, Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) develops the Christian idea of God, his creation, and other topics of Christian doctrine in a way that can be understood by reason. In doing so, he wants to rethink the Christian faith in the light of human rationality as well as to defend it against ancient philosophy and non-Christian thinkers. The second book is devoted to the subject of creation, both Gods act of creation and created beings in their diversity. Thomas pays special attention to rational beings who can know God as creator. In the seminar we will read Summa contra Gentiles in English translation, taking into account the Latin text and focusing on the topics of the active power of God, God as cause of being, creation from nothing, why the world is not eternal, creation by God’s will, intellectual beings and the human soul united to the body.
