The course RETKN1032 -- Theology and Exegesis of the Old Testament -- is a required course for students of the combined master's degree in Protestant Theology.
The course is always taught in the winter semester.
It is related to RETKN1021 Seminar on the Old Testament, which is taught in the immediately following summer semester.
The course is normally offered every two years -- alternating with similar courses in the Department of New Testament.
Through a combination of lecture and practicum forms, students gradually acquire the principles and practices of professional work in biblical studies -- the analysis of Old Testament biblical texts in their literary and cultural-historical context, various methods of interpretation and exegesis, and procedures for critical evaluation of the existing interpretive tradition in its pluralistic and historical contextual form.
Students are expected to engage the knowledge and skills that are part of the substance of the comprehensive examination in Old Testament Biblical Studies at the end of the SP Evangelical Theology BA. Ongoing preparation is expected for each lesson of the texts discussed, study of recommended readings, preparation of partial analyses or interpretations, and development of one's own interpretive suggestions for the texts discussed.
The credit is conditional on the acceptance of a written paper (5-8 standard pages) on one of the subtopics or texts covered in the semester.
