In these four books we will see not only origins and history of cities and how they look but also their role in culture/civilisation. Except for reading and discussing the texts I prepare also some pictorial presentation on cities we are going to discuss.
In the course we are going to look at history of city (and history of that history of cities) through reading some key texts of 20 th century dealing with history of cities. We start with real classic Lewis Mumford and his “City in history”, then look at Spiro Kostof’s “The city shaped” and/or “City assembled”, then to Rem Koolhaas “Delirious New York” and last but not least at Peter Hall’s “Cities in civilization”.
