Over the last decade, historians and social scientists began to ask more penetrating questionsabout how people experienced their everyday lives under totalitarian regimes. In this course,students will explore how the Nazi
German and Communist regimes controlled citizens’ livesthrough a number of various ‘everyday’ strategies, such as food, youth and popular culture,resistance and gender and sexuality. We will also explore how citizens used the
‘everyday’ tocounter and undermine the control and influence of these regimes.
