Annotation

Religion in the U.S.A. influences the public, political and cultural life in much more massive way, than imaginable according to the Central European experience. The American society influences the Czech one - again, in much more massive way, than it is usually reflected.

Therefore the task of this course - to present the American religion in its main features: the main points of religious history, starting from the Puritans; the main churches and religious movements of the present; selected examples of the influence of the religion on the American literature, film, music and arts; the blending of religion and politics. The central idea of the course is the permanent dichotomy between two contradictory tendencies: the religious fundamentalism and the religious liberalism.

The course is based on lector´s recently completed stay in the U.S.A.
