The New Testament between a translation and a paraphrase

Publication |
2009

Abstract

Twenty years ago (1989) (God´s Word for the Journey), the Czech "paraphrased translation" of the New Testament was published (further editions 1990,1994-1997, 2000). this translation is a work originality inspired by Kenneth N Taylor´s American Living Bible (first published 1971), but in fact, the approach of the translators was very independent and inventive. The article thoroughly describes historical circumstances of the emergence of this very free Czech translation ( rooted in an ardent Christian environment but primarily aimed at secular readers), introduces the members of the translators´ team (originally, they wanted to remain anonymous) and their working method.

Based on textual analyses and comparisons. the article demonstrates the relation of the translation "Slovo na cestu" to the original Greek text, to other Czech New Testament translations of the time and to English Living Bible, and also the development of the translation text in its various editions.
