Patriotism or fear of their own existence? Getting Spisske diocese clergy to collaborate with the StB secret

Abstract
This study tries to elaborate a typology of the recruitment of former agensts among Catholic priets who collaborated with the secret police in Czechoslovakia(StB(). Since the official motives of the StB often differed from the priets personal motivation, this study attempts to present a typology from both perspektives.
On the basis of the reconstruction of StB- documents it is shown that the secret police only cursorily knew the motives of the agents. What is more even contradictions between the official motive and the priests´reactions can be found in the files.
