Abstract
The article points at the inspiration and sources of A. Theodor Balan’s thoughts during his stay in Prague with J.
Gebauer in the years 1879-1882 not only at the factual thoughts about language (in his Bulgarian grammar written in Czech in 1881), but also when setting out the tasks of national philology. The parallels between the scientific and pedagogical work of both scientists are analysed and it is emphasized, that when evaluating A.
Theodor Balan’s work and thoughts, his stay in Prague at the beginning of his career cannot be overlooked.
