Visceral Brain and Hypothesis of Somatic Markers

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Nowadays, the concept of visceral brain is already considered obsolete. We rather talk about the limbic brain.

It participates in somato- vegetative regulation and as an old part of the brain, it also processes emotional stimuli and unconscious reactions to the stimuli. The cerebral cortex represents superordinate control of these subetages of perceptual and emotional processes.

With regard to decision making, prefrontal cortex of the frontal lobe (especially its ventro-medial area) is concerned. Damasio et al. somatic-markers hypothesis posits that „we make decisions according to how we feel" (consciously or non-consiously).

In our pilot study we have attempted to map the relationship between emotional decision-making and personality characteristics.
