Abstract

This study describes relations of USA and Federal Republic Germany (FRG) in 1963-1966. In this period, there are two main issues that both sides had to solve.

In the beginning, it was the problem of Multilateral Force, which was, in the end, overshadowed by the balance of payments issue. This study draws also the attention to relations of Lyndon Johnson and Ludwig Erhard.

The difference between them is that the president of the United States was more pragmatic. While the FRG chancellor was in foreign policy issues often an idealist.

Finally in 1966, the pressure on Erhard connected with balance of payments was rising. Consequently he had to resign and his political career ended other than happy.
