Abstract

The chapter provides an overview of psychological aspects of of Type 1 and 2 DM, involving: patients’ emotional reactions to a diagnosis of DM and therapy; the stages of acceptance of the illness (initial shock, denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, acceptance); the relationship between diabetes and psychiatric disorders, especially depression, anxiety, and eating disorders (including diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa); psychosocial factors in brittle diabetes. Contains an overview of antidepressant agents commonly used in treatment of depression (along with dosage and side effects shown in table).
