Bakhshali Manuscript

Abstract

The Bakhshali Manuscript is the name given to an ancient Indian mathematical work written on birch-bark. It was discovered in 1881 near the village Bakhshali.

The manuscript is incomplete, its author and date are unknown. In the Bakhshali Manuscript there are several interesting problems such as solving linear equations, solving quadratic equations and the methods for calculating square root, examples of the rule of three, progressions and so on.
