Rancière and Aesthetics

Abstract

This paper presents the origins, evolution and evaluation of the French contemporary philosopher Jacques Rancière's aesthetic thought who has devoted the last twenty years to a continuous philosophical reflection of the relation between art and politics. Rancière has been deeply influenced by the student revolt of 68, in which he took active part, and the questions of equality and democracy have remained at the centre of his intellectual interest ever since, as his writings on aesthetics attest.
