Invagination is one of the most frequent causes of acute intestinal occlusion in young children. Intussusception occurs when a portion of the alimentary tract is telescoped into an adjacent segment.
Intussusception are most often ileocolic and ileoileocolic. Ultrasonography is a sensitive diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of intussusception.
Reduction of an acute intussusception is an emergency procedure and performed immediately after diagnosis in preparacion. Untreated intussusception in infants is almost always fatal.
Most infants recover if the intussusception is reduced within the first 24 hours.
