Abstract
The article focuses on the development of the conception of the reincarnating soul between the Presocratics and Plato. According to the provided reconstruction Empedocles and Philolaus, despite believing in the reincarnating soul, held that it is in a certain sense material.
The main development is thus due to Plato, who is the first author having a conception of immaterial soul.
