Abstract

The book describes a Christmas celebration in Bohemia and Moravia in the years 1918 and 1989. It focuses on changes in the phenomenon of celebrating Christmas during the “First Republic”, Nazi occupation, 1950s, more liberal 1960s and the period of “normalization”.

Attention is also paid to how the Christmas were celebrated by prisoners in the Nazi concentration camps, prisoners in “cell death”, forced laborers in the Nazi Germany, Czech airmen in RAF, soldiers in the eastern and western front and prisoners in communist prisons and labor camps. The book is a contribution to the knowledge of everyday life in different decades, as it also describes changes in Christmas tradition.

The book reflects the efforts of totalitarian regimes to replace traditional Christmas traditions. The book contains rich selection of photos and pictures.
