Prehospital intubation in patients with traumatic brain injury - do we treat or harm?

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2010

Abstract

An increasing body of evidence about the negative effect of early prehospital intubation on mortality and morbidity, at least in some systems of pre-hospital emergency care, is bringing frequent debates on the effectiveness and benefits of the early intubation in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. The adverse effects of tracheal intubation, unrecognized oesophageal intubation, and hyperventilation with a number of cerebrovascular and immunological consequences, belong to the most negative factors.

Review summarizes the current recommendations for optimal use of all available tools and techniques for the airway management.
