Abstract

The causative agent of tetanus is Clostridium tetani that produces 2 toxins - tetanospamin and tetanolysin. Worldwide incidence is about 1 million cases per year.

Incubation time ranges from several days to several weeks. The typical symptoms include trismus, risus sardonicus, episodes of generalized convulsions.

Basic therapy includes the complex intensive care, noiseless surroundings, convulsion suppression. The administration of antitetanic globulin and start of the active immunization with tetanus anatoxin is urgent within 24 hours from the onset of symptoms.

The overall prevention is possible by systematic vaccination of population with tetanic anatoxin.
