Abstract
While before 1989 the Czech Republic, like the majority of the former socialist states in Eastern Europe, had a high abortion rate, over the course of 15 years its abortion rate approached levels in Western European countries and in recent years its rate of induced abortion has been lower than that in Sweden or Norway. By 2007 the share of women aged 15-49 using some form of modern birth control had increased to reach almost 55%.
