The Czech version of the New Testament Verse Jas 2,18 is contradictory in its sense within the context (especially from the point of view of the immediately preceding Verse 17) in most of the 20th century Czech translations. The problem is caused by the fact that the Greek connector alla is mechanically rendered in all the modern Czech translations as a strong adversative particle (Czech ale, possibly also však; in one Czech translation the adversative meaning is expressed in a different way).
The ?philological? error in Jas 2,18 analyzed in the article therefore illustrates two permanent problems in the Czech New Testament translations: 1/ unsatisfactory awareness of the question of wider text coherence of the original, 2/ not very critical attitude towards the tradition of Czech Bible translation.
