Abstract

The conditions for reception of Schopenhauer?s ideas were far from felicitous in the first decade of the twentieth century, owing to previous generations. The artists of the so-called National Theatre generation as well as the artists of the 1890?s generation had treated the philosopher?s legacy reservedly.

In those rare cases where there appeared a sign of Schopenhauer?s influence in an artwork or a piece of writing, this was either merely partial or the philosopher?s ideas were distorted and misinterpreted. In the writings of many art theoreticians and critics of these generations even negation of some of Schopenhauer?s theses can be found and it was rather Friedrich Nietzsche?s philosophical views towards which they leaned.
