The contingent valuation method is used here to estimate mothers? willingness to pay to protect their children and themselves from selected respiratory illnesses in two regions of the Czech Republic. The effects of types of parental guardianship and altruism on the willingness to pay for a reduction in health risks for children is further analysed in this paper.
Three groups of parental guardianship are defined externally: altruistic, pragmatic, and indifferent. We show how the explanatory power of the general WTP model increases when the type of parental guardianship is included.
These results indicate that other (qualitative) variables but respondents? budgetary restrictions need to be included and controlled for in valuation studies.
