Abstract
Contribution shortly reviews responsibilities of the tertiary educational sector in the contemporary world and attempts to define its position within the mainstream EU policy and relevant documents. Theoretical analysis of the paradigm shifts in science and research is presented; most important opportunities and risks of the routinely used interdisciplinary approaches are discussed in this context.
Institutional reactions to the globalization challenges are described as the role of international associations in the process of sustainability.
