John Malalas and the Ethnographic Story about Sovius in the Chronograph, 1262: Byzantine Chronicle in Translation and the Ancient Literature of Lithuania

Abstract

Analysis of both manuscripts (the Archival and the Vilnius ones) enables revealing the important literary potential and drawing a conclusion that we are dealing here with a result of original literary creativity rather than an extrinsic fixation of foreign story. It is here and only here that the author addresses the reader in his own name, dating the start of his literary creation.

In order of representing his "own Sovius", the author employs exceptional means; quite unusual, should we maintain that the ordinary compiled index was merely mechanically expanded. Special emphasis is placed in the article on the textual structure.
