Researcher trapped : Reflections on the (a)symmetry in the researcher-researched relationships

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2010

Abstract

The article focuses on the social science research ethics and discusses the question of the relationship between researcher and researched persons. It outlines two possible approaches to research ethics (ethics of justice, ethics of care) and attempts to draw attention to their limits using a concrete example from the anthropological practice of the author.

The author refers mainly to the fact that the traditional understanding of the power imbalance between research participants emphasizes the superiority of the researcher - while according to her experience it is on the contrary often the researcher who is in a weaker and dependent position.
