Abstract

This study has two main aims. First, it introduces the concept of political disaffection and its measurement.

Second, it explores its operationalization and on the basis of this research offers arguments for the use of some measures in future studies. Political disaffection is divided into two dimensions: institutional disaffection means beliefs that political institutions are not responsive to the requirements of the people, whereas individual disaffection concerns of whether the citizens are able and willing to participation in politics.

In the empirical part, principal axis factoring, reliability analysis and internal and external validity analysis is undertaken using ISSP surveys in the Czech Republic from the years 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2006. The results indicate that items used for measuring institutional and individual disaffection measure the concepts of interest.
