Phylogenetic relationships of selected bats from the genera Myotis, Glauconycteris, Neoromicia, Laephotis, Nycticeinops, Scotoecus and Pipistrellus originating from Senegal were investigated using non-differentially stained karyotypes and the sequences of five mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b, tRNA-Thr, 12S, tRNA-Val, 16S) and two nuclear genes (RAG1, RAG 2), together with data obtained from GenBank. Our findings indicate that current definitions of some genera do not represent phylogenetically natural groups and some species should be transferred to other genera.
This is especially the case of several species which are now assigned to Hypsugo, Laephotis and Neoromicia.
