The text considers the state of media studies in late 1920s and early 1930s in former Czechoslovakia. The decades between two world wars were quite fruitful period in the history of Czech reflections on the media, press and journalism.
A new academic journal Duch novin [The Spirit of Newspapers] was established in 1928 and was published for four years. The representatives of the journal put together an informal circle and claimed the need of establishing a new field of sociological studies of newspaper and journalism.
The text offers some interpretation of the founding ideas on which the field supposed to be based on.
