Abstract

This paper introduces amateur subtitles, or user-generated subtitles, as a specific type of user-generated content. First, a theoretical outline of the phenomenon is provided, using concepts from both media studies and translation studies.

User subtitling is conceptualized as a social activity, technical manipulation and semiotic operation. Motivation for user-generated translation is explained using Bourdieu''s concepts of cultural and social capital.

A case study of the Czech subtitles for the Game of Thrones TV series provides a detailed look into the processes, context and texts of amateur translation. A key informant interview with the amateur translator is used to shed light on the motivations behind and the logistics of his work.

A qualitative analysis of the comments on the Titulky.com website provides a basic understanding of its users'' expectations related to amateur subtitling. A brief comparison between an institutional and a user-generated translation highlights the differences between translation strategies in different contexts.
