This paper introduces amateur subtitles, or user-generated subtitles, as a specific type of user-generated content. First, a theoretical outline of the phenomenon is provided, using concepts from both media studies and translation studies.
User subtitling is conceptualized as a social activity, technical manipulation and semiotic operation. Motivation for user-generated translation is explained using Bourdieu''s concepts of cultural and social capital.
