Abstract
This review article analyzes various proposals to use the concept of economic culture as an instrument of explanation in the research on post-communist transformation. Attempts to understand economic culture as identical or closely related to formal/informal institutions, social capital and civil society are discussed and assessed.
It is argued that in the study of social and economic phenomena economic culture should be utilized as an explanatory concept in its own right.
